敁珗腦瞳傻う the exhibition:

Carpas (the Spanish word for tent) refers to groups of traveling entertainers who performed in the 1920s-30s across Mexico and the southwestern United States, using collapsible stages and carpas to move from town to town and present programs that were often educational to the communities with news of the day. For this exhibition, Hugo Crosthwaite has reinterpreted the Carpas to present imagery that is of importance to the Mexican-American communities of today.

CARPAS is being exhibited at the 敁珗腦瞳傻う Art Gallery as part of the . This presentation can be viewed in dialogue with a broader conversation occurring across Southern California and various exhibition spaces, artists, institutions, and exhibitions included in the SUR:biennial, exploring the complex notions of globalization and exchange that takes place in the ambiguous borderlands between Los Angeles and the broader South, including the Norco-Corona/Inland Empire region.

Hugo Crosthwaite is a contemporary figurative artist best known for his black and white graphite and charcoal drawings as well as stop-motion drawing animations. His work is characterized by irreverent and provocative images inspired by the U.S./Mexico border.

His work has been included in numerous national and international exhibitions. In 2019, Crosthwaite won the Outwin Boochever National Portrait Competition from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. He also won the FEMSA XI Bienal de Monterrey in 2015. He is a member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte-FONCA and his animated shorts have been featured in several film festivals such as the Morelia International Film Festival in Michoacan M矇xico, the LGBT+ Los Angeles Film Festival and the Los Angeles Latinx Film Festival and the Guanajuato International Film Festival. Hugo Crosthwaite is represented by in Los Angeles and in NYC.
